Bald Eagle in coloured pencil

It’s a beautiful, windy autumn day, so why not put something on paper for my first blog post. My website is still a bit black and white at the moment, but the idea is to fill it with lots of coloured pencil drawings. Ever since I really started diving in the wonderful world of coloured pencils I’ve got hooked.

At the moment I’m working on this big drawing of a Bald Eagle. Did you know that it can reach a wingspan of 1.8 to 2.3 metres. Isn’t that impressive?

I started by laying in the first of about 5 layers. This layer consists of what I call, the hidden colours. When I really started to look at the black feathers, I discovered all kinds of colours: icy blues, warm purples. So I think there are about 6 or more colours in each feather. Then I started alternating the colours and add black, browns and royal blue in the final layer. The first layer with the hidden colours are still shining through. This is what makes coloured pencil so wonderful to work with. The shadows are put in with a layer of purple or blue, depending on what I can see. And finally I put on the black or brown.

I still have a lot of work to do, but I’m very happy to do it. I’ll try to post weekly and I hope you’ll find them a bit useful. So till next time and have a nice and artfull week.
